We work to promote environmental justice for Women by working with grassroots women’s groups and women not only resisting injustices, but also to build alternatives for managing the world in a sustainable way.
We promote environmental justice because it is our response to the degradation of our environment. Capitalism is driving a massive consumption of our planet’s resources in pursuit of endless economic growth. This comes at the expense of our planet’s ecological balance. Climate change and global warming are some of the adverse effects that are already being felt. We are living beyond our means and there is a price to pay. But the people currently paying that price are spread unevenly and those who are least responsible for climate change and environmental degradation experience the greatest impacts. Women who experience not only the effects of environmental damage, but also the intersecting oppressions and violence within their contexts are the most affected.
Feminist environmental justice grassroots women’s groups we are working with are resisting the abuse of corporate power and state power. They defend their territories, communities and environment from extractive industries and destructive agriculture and development projects. They demand climate justice because those who are least responsible for climate change experience its greatest impact. Through resistance, they challenge profit-oriented models of development and progress. In doing so, they confront powerful players such as governments and corporations. They fight for their rights to participate fully in decision making processes. For example, we have been working with Women in Albertine Region in Western Uganda to empower women leaders and grassroots women’s groups in the region to resist development aggression and militarization arising out of the oil discovery and exploration in the region, while fighting for women’s leadership and participation in decision making on policies and programmes that affect women and the environment.
In Mbarara City Western Uganda, we are working with Women from urban communities that depend on River Rwizi to fight against water pollution by Corporations that dispose off wastes to the river. In same city, Voice of Mitooma is working with Women’s groups to engage government officials who embezzle revenue that is supposed to go back to communities to protect the environment. We support women’s groups in Urban areas to build an environmentally just world in different ways. Groups of women’s groups we support are working to develop alternatives to the extractive, linear and universal model of economic growth. Some of the ideas from women’s groups also emerge from communities that have continued to live sustainably ever since the arrival of extractive industries and destructive agriculture and development projects.
An association of women lawyers working to promote and protect the rights of women in infrastructure development. Infrastructure projects can result in the loss of livelihoods for women, loss of land rights, increased risks to health and safety, and greater gender inequality. We work with stakeholders to mainstream a gender perspective across the infrastructure lifecycle—planning, design, construction, operations, and maintenance as a strategy for achieving positive outcomes for women such as increased labour market participation, economic empowerment, and improved health and safety.
We examine the effectiveness of existing infrastructure policies, project evaluation approaches and operational-level grievance mechanisms, among other things, to identify gaps and formulate recommendations for ensuring women’s empowerment.
